Narrative:
The real stars of this Peru trip were the kids and parents. They typically arrive before we do and wait for hours, sometimes days, just to be seen. Some are local, but the majority come from areas 3-6 hours away, often by bus or other public transport. Because of the distance, they stay the entire time we are there in a local dormitory called ‘Casa Nancy’ (donated for just this purpose) until their casts are changed or removed on our last day there.

Below are a few stories about some of the patients served by this trip.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth, a 5-year old, had lost her leg in a car accident about 14 months prior to our arrival. She is seen in the process of getting her new leg. She was so excited and positive about getting her new leg and learning how to walk! Her Dad was overjoyed seeing her walk again, and is seen holding her afterward.

Pedro

Pedro, a 7-year old boy, had grown up without an arm due to a birth defect. He had minimal “problems” living with only one complete arm and initially was skeptical of a “new, complete” arm for his other side. Then he started realizing what he could do with it. He will probably be seen again next year to be fitted with a replacement arm with a more cosmetic and/or functional hand.

Yurema Nampa

Yurema Nampa, a 7-year old girl, had major surgery on her foot. She is seen walking after her cast was removed with a big smile on her face. About half an hour after the cast change, Missy Farris and another team member decided to take a quick trip into the next town. Yurema and her mother happened to get on the same bus! She was so excited to see them that she sat on Missy’s lap the entire way. Such a fun way to see them off!

Luz Mery

Luz Mery, a sweet 9-year old girl who had lost her arm in a tractor accident. She was so excited with her new arm and hand, and the new capabilities she now had!
