The 2016 ENT team worked at the Kausay Wasi Clinic from September 25 to October 1. The team was again led by both Drs. Mitch Brock, M.D. and Steve Long, M.D. Excellent anesthesia was provided by Dr. Chloe Maycock, M.D. and Lisa Harrison. Pediatrician Dr. Karoline Brock, M.D. and obstetrician Dr. Wendy Smith, M.D. focused on their own project teaching a course called Helping Babies Breathe. The course involved instructing newborn resuscitation techniques to nurses and lay midwives in various clinics throughout the Sacred Valley and Cusco.
After arriving to Calca one day to give the course at the local health center, Drs. Karoline Brock and Wendy Smith asked to see the nursery. As they were walking by the warmers, Dr. Brock noticed that one of the newborns was in severe distress. She and Dr. Smith cared for the child as an ambulance was called. In the meantime a father came down from the jungle carrying another newborn that was in even more distress than the first child. The doctors transported both children to Cusco where they could be cared for in a better-equipped health center. Needless to say, the room was full for their class the next day.
