This trip was our 6th medical mission to the Sacred Valley of the Inca in Peru. Our ENT team provided evaluation and triage of indigent patients with a wide range of ear, nose and throat problems. Working through Sandy and Guido Del Prado and the Kausay Wasi Clinic in Coya, Peru, we arrived on Sunday, September 27th to find patients lined up down the street and around the block. Most had learned of our visit through the local news media and word of mouth. Many patients had traveled for hours from distant parts of the valley to see us for evaluation and possible surgery.

Over the course of our week, we saw 192 patients in the Clinic, many of whom received medications brought from the United States as well as Spanish language information concerning common ENT disorders. Our team worked alongside the Clinic nurses to help with pre- and post-operative care. The well-equipped Kausay Wasi operative suite provided an excellent stage to perform the 23 surgeries of varying types and complexity including excision of neck masses, tonsillectomies, ear tubes, nasal surgeries, mastoidectomies, and eardrum reconstructions.

We are looking forward to our next mission planned for October, 2011.
